Rothbury began as a Congregational community established by Rev. Reid of St
Paul's Congregational Church in Newcastle. The original building was
at the west end of the village and opened for public worship in 1840. However,
within fifty years it became apparent that a newer and larger building was
required and in 1893 a new church building was erected on a site in Market Place provided
by Lord Armstrong. This building was re-furbished in 1992.

Thropton's pedigree can be traced back to the late 1600s when Dissenters met for
worship up the Coquet valley under the Preaching Trees at Windyhaugh.
Presbyterian congregations were later established at Harbottle (1713) and at Thropton
(1799) and in 1981 the two congregations merged and used the church in Thropton
(built in 1863) for worship. In 2006, the congregation of the United Reformed Church in
Redesdale joined the congregation who worship in Thropton.
